Eddy Current Separator Machine

What is a Eddy Current Separator Machine?

An Eddy Current Separator (ECS) is a high-efficiency sorting machine used to separate non-ferrous metals from mixed waste streams. It is mainly applied in recycling plants to recover aluminum, copper, brass, zinc, and other conductive metals from materials such as electronic waste, scrap metal, municipal solid waste, and automobile shredder residue (ASR).

The machine operates through a high-speed magnetic rotor installed inside the conveyor drum. As materials pass through the magnetic field, non-ferrous metals generate eddy currents that create a repelling force, allowing them to be separated from non-metallic materials. Eddy current separators are widely used in modern recycling lines to improve metal recovery rates, increase material purity, and reduce landfill waste. If you’d like to learn more about eddy current separators versus magnetic separators, please click on this article.

Applicable Materials

The Eddy Current Separator is suitable for processing e-waste, scrap metal, aluminum cans, automobile shredder residue (ASR), municipal solid waste (MSW), plastic recycling materials, incineration bottom ash, and mixed non-ferrous metal waste streams. Commonly used to recover aluminum, copper, brass, zinc, and other conductive non-ferrous metals from mixed recyclable materials.

Working Principle

The Eddy Current Separator uses a high-speed rotating magnetic rotor to separate non-ferrous metals from mixed material streams. When conductive metals pass through the alternating magnetic field, eddy currents are generated inside the metal particles, creating a repulsive force that ejects them from the material flow.

Working Process

  1. Material Feeding
Mixed materials are evenly conveyed to the separator through the feeding conveyor.
  2. Magnetic Rotor Operation
The high-speed magnetic rotor inside the drum generates a rapidly changing magnetic field.
  3. Eddy Current Generation
Non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and copper produce eddy currents when exposed to the magnetic field.
  4. Metal Separation
The repulsive force pushes non-ferrous metals away from the normal material trajectory, separating them from plastics, glass, rubber, and other non-metallic materials.
  5. Material Collection
Separated metals and remaining materials are discharged through different outlets for further processing or recycling.
